TEM #004: Let’s get existential.

July 7, 2023

Hi! Thanks for being here. Hope you’ve had a fun week. 🧨

This week’s highlights:

  • Your education affirmation

  • 3 tools to amplify your personal statement

  • Action steps for the next week

  • Thoughts on Threads

Education affirmation.

Your life is full of potential.

On the Blog.

You’ve heard it before:

“Tell me about yourself.”

That common interview question takes on new life when you write a personal statement for graduate school.

After 10 years of reading thousands of applications, I know firsthand that the best essays and statements have one thing in common: strong self awareness.

To boost how you express it effectively, outsource the language you use to describe yourself. These 3 tools will help.

Personal Statements: 3 Tools to Describe Yourself Better ✏️

Application Action Steps.

Choose your own adventure 🚁

  1. Thinking about school in the future?

    • More likely than not, you’ll need to write a personal statement or statement of purpose (they’re similar but different, no need to think about it right now).

    • On your “Future Education Opportunities” document, start a section for Personal Statements.

    • Whenever you have an accomplishment, challenge you’ve worked through or other story that relates to your future career goals, take 5 minutes to add a few notes to this section. Your future self will thank you.

  2. Actively applying later this year?

    • It’s time to start thinking about that personal statement. It can be rough, but I pinkie-promise you’ll make it through.

    • This week’s step is to check out the blog post above - take one of the assessments and save your results to your application folder. (You’ll come back to this when you start writing, let’s just take things one step at a time).

Small pile of multi-colored sewing threads.

Fun fact.

Zuckerberg’s taking on Twitter with the new Threads.

Even more amusing is this Google find:

Threads is a 1984 British-Australian apocalyptic war drama television film.” (Wikipedia)

I’m interested to see if they have a similar ending.
