TEM #008: The actual costs of applying 💸

August 4, 2023

Happy Fri-Yay!

This month, The Education Mindset is taking a page out of the European book of summer restoration - the next edition will arrive August 25.

(Exciting things are happening behind the scenes, stay tuned!)

This week’s highlights:

  • Your education affirmation

  • 5 costs of applying to graduate school

  • Action steps for the next week

  • Strawberry shortcake 🍰

Education affirmation.

I am building my future.

On the Blog.

You’re likely researching programs and have an idea of the annual cost between tuition and student fees.

But before your first tuition statement, you need to apply… which isn’t usually free. These are the 5 costs you can expect from the graduate school application process (plus ways to reduce them!).

The 5 Actual Costs ($$$) of Applying to Graduate School 💸

Application Action Steps.

Choose your own adventure 🚁

  1. Thinking about school in the future?

    • Open your “Future Education Opportunities” document and start a section for Expected Application Costs.

    • Budgeting now will reduce stress and surprises later.

    • Take note of how many schools you will need to request transcripts (ex. your college and any other school you have undergraduate or graduate credits)

    • Add the standardized test you will most likely take (ex. GRE for humanities and social sciences, GMAT for business, LSAT for law, MCAT for medical)

  2. Actively applying later this year?

    • It’s time to get strategic about your application costs.

    • If you don’t have one yet, it’s time to start an application tracker.

    • Take note of: application fees for each school, total transcript fees (plus how many to request in total), whether standardized tests are required (including the cost).

Fun fact.

Those spongey hockey puck cakes next to strawberries in the produce aisle? Not shortcakes.

Traditional shortcake is actually scone-like in texture. Over time, regional preferences changed to be sweet and fluffy in the southern US, yet crumbly and dense in the north. Seems on brand.

(No ties to graduate school this week, I was just inspired by a delicious, crumbly strawberry shortcake 🍓).
